AquaMissions’ purpose is to save lives and dispel fears through introductory water experiences, safety instruction, and swim lessons for Greater Cleveland’s youth.

Meet Jose, a brave ninth-grader I met at a Cleveland Metropolitan School District water immersion event on Lake Erie last summer. With visible fear, Jose approached me, asking, "You're in charge, right?" He confessed, "I've never worn a life jacket or been in the water."

After equipping him with a life jacket and explaining its use, Jose nervously asked, “What happens when I’m in the water? How does it work?” I assured him that the buoyant life jacket would keep him afloat like a cork.

Encouraging Jose to decide at his own pace (“challenge by choice”), we eventually ventured onto the paddle boards. When he finally took the plunge, his face lit up with pure joy, exclaiming, “It works!” This is a testament to his triumph over fear, showcasing his courage and resilience.

I dream of connecting Lake Erie with underserved students, many of whom have never seen our Great Lake. Imagine the incredible impact on thousands of kids, granting them newfound confidence to pursue lives beyond their imagination. Thanks to my mother, Lois, I was blessed to learn how to swim at a young age. Never having the opportunity herself, it was important to her that I learn, especially since we enjoyed a small boat on the lake.
